Zero Knowledge Servers

What are Zero Knowledge Servers?

In a nutshell, Zero-Knowledge servers, like the ones we have at GuardMail, are servers that know nothing or “have zero knowledge” about the data that gets stored on them. Like a memory that gets constantly wiped clean, keeping zero knowledge of your sensitive data on our servers means we never have access to your information. Even if your passwords get lost, we cannot find a way into your email account. It’s a completely secure, and entirely private email storage.

Zero Knowledge software services store, transfer or manipulate data so that it is only accessible to its owner, not to the service provider. This is accomplished by encrypting the raw data at the client side or through end-to-end encryption (between clients), without disclosing the password to the service provider, so that only those with encryption keys may have access.

Why are Zero Knowledge Servers important?

Having zero knowledge on data servers means neither the service provider, nor any third party who may be skimming your emails for data collection, or cyber criminals that might intercept and hack your data, can ever decrypt and access the data on their own.

Zero-Knowledge servers ensure that ABSOLUTELY no one can access whatever data you’ve secured with it. The password is for your eyes only. This level of security means that only YOU have the keys to access your stored data. Yes, that also prevents the service provider – like GuardMail – from looking at your data.

Zero Knowledge servers allow users a higher degree of privacy and security than would otherwise be possible. In addition, zero-knowledge private email services usually aspire to hold as little metadata as possible, so as not to jeopardize clients’ privacy by holding data beyond what is functionally needed by the service.

What are the benefits of Zero Knowledge Servers?

Basically, the benefit of having zero knowledge servers is like saying that no one – not even the postman, nor any of the staff at the post office have the capability of opening your mail.

Only you and those with a key can gain access. This is because zero knowledge servers retain “no knowledge” of your passwords or private keys.

Most cloud storage services keep a copy of the client’s password on their servers, allowing clients who have lost their passwords to retrieve and decrypt their data using alternative means of authentication; but since zero-knowledge services do not store copies of clients’ passwords, if a client loses their password, then their data cannot be decrypted. Private email from GuardMail really means private!

For you, it means more security, greater privacy, and full control over your data.
